APRIL IN LABIN AND RABAC
Experience the most beautiful Istrian landscapes following the adventure race 100 Miles of Istria. The longest ultra-trail race in Croatia starts in Labin Old town at 5 PM on April 11th. Five hundred and fifty contestants take part in this 166 km long endurance race which, in its first part, leads through spectacular countryside of Labin area. From the Old town runners follow Sentona’s trail near the streams and waterfalls to sea and Rabac, and then climb over Kosi and Plomin to Učka mountain tops and run further through Istria finishing the race in Umag. Enjoy the indigenous Istrian tastes at a traditional gathering of Istrian restaurateurs, winemakers, olive oil producers and family farms. The 8th Tastes of Istria open in Trg labinskih rudara in Labin at 11 AM on April 11th. Visitors will be able to buy a ceramic plate (30kn price) for unlimited tasting of the meals served, and a wine glass (20 kn price) providing no limit wine tasting. The programme includes cooking show with experts judging asparagus dishes. Near-by the two-day 6th Labin Flower Fair opens on the same day.
The traditional boat race in Rabac brings the spirit of charming local rivalries, lots of fun, music and local seafood specialities. Preserving the tradition of Rabac fishermen, its inhabitants compete in popular voganje (rowing in Rabac dialect) starting from the waterfront and finishing on the right side of the Rabac bay at Teleferika- ruins of an old railway once used for bauxite transport from Labin mines. With the loud support, teasing and lots of laughter, the party continues at the waterfront with a traditional rope pulling competition, delicious grilled sardines, local wines and live music.

Labin Old town is famous for its medieval palaces which were built at the beginning of the 16th century following the rise of Venetian Republic. One of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces belonged to a prominent aristocratic family Scampicchio who gave several intellectuals and town mayors. The prominent town representatives were also entrusted the town archive which was kept in their family palace where they also preserved a collection of geological rarities from Labin area. Antonio Scampicchio, Labin Mayor and a member of the Istrian Parliament, was interested in geology and archaeology, and founded the first Istrian museum collection within the palace. The palace was built in the 16th century next to the parish church, and the family coat of arms is preserved on the front façade. In 1582 the family donated a part of their property for the church to be extended, and in turn for that were given a permission by Pope Urban VIII to connect the palace with the church i.e. to build their private passage to the church which is nowadays on of the most popular motifs while taking photos in the Old town.
